RISE

Our Story

The dream of a free public lending library was born in the heart of Ken Machisa several years ago. A life long learner, Ken understands the value of strong literacy skills. Combined with his desire to provide access to literature and learning opportunities, Ken possesses a gentle strength in making personal connections in every environment. A Zambian who made his home in the Livingstone area for many years, he is aware of the need for increased literacy skills and understands the benefit this increase can bring to a community.

On a vision trip to Zambia in 2017, Diane Gratopp was able to join Ken and Laura (nee Gratopp) Machisa to catch a glimpse of Livingstone and the surrounding area. A visit to the Siamate Village, along the Zambezi River, sparked a goal in Diane to supply a small village preschool with teaching materials and books for the students.

When Diane and Laura returned to the States, the collection of materials began and due to limitations with distance and shipping, materials were delivered on yearly visits to Zambia. When Ken was able to join Laura in the States, discussions were beginning between the three to grow a library for an area with little or no access to books. With a simple request for 35 new backpacks for The Big Tree Preschool, the reality of a library was evident. Generous hearts responded with backpacks, supplies and BOOKS. With the help of AmeZam shipping, more than 3,000 books were shipped in the first four months of what has become Rise Literacy Zambia.

With a literacy rate of less than seventy percent in Zambia, the need is present. Higher literacy rates are associated with healthier communities, greater economic growth with increased employment rates and less crime. Along with these factors, increased literacy skills will promote strong relationships within families, communities, and will encourage further education.

The Rise Literacy Zambia team is thankful to be a part of this journey to build a free public access library and increase learning opportunities through mentoring and professional development.
